BIO

Meghan O’Hara is an award-winning, multi-disciplinary director and filmmaker. She is best known for her powerful and impactful documentaries and narrative films that explore the intersections of identity, culture, and power.

O’Hara was born and raised in New York City. She studied film at the University of Southern California and has since gone on to make a name for herself in the industry. Her documentaries have won awards at festivals including the Sundance Film Festival, Tribeca Film Festival, and the Berlin International Film Festival. She is also the recipient of two Emmy Awards for her work in documentary filmmaking.

O’Hara’s work focuses on the stories of marginalized communities and has often been inspired by her own experiences as a queer woman of color. Her films explore topics such as racism, police brutality, and the criminal justice system. O’Hara’s debut feature documentary, “ ‘Til Kingdom Come”, tells the story of a Kentucky coal mining town’s struggle to survive in the face of a powerful mining company. The documentary was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival and was broadcast on PBS in 2019.

In addition to her documentary work, O’Hara has also directed narrative films, such as the short film "The Birth of an Idea” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2019. The film tells the story of a queer Black woman’s journey of self-discovery as she navigates the turbulent waters of coming out.

O’Hara is also an advocate for diverse voices in the film industry. She has been a vocal supporter of women directors and has been involved in several initiatives that provide mentorship and support for female-identifying filmmakers.

Through her work, O’Hara has become a powerful voice for social justice and marginalized communities. Her films have been praised for their honest portrayals of complex issues and her commitment to telling stories that challenge the status quo. She continues to be a trailblazer in the film industry and a champion for underrepresented voices.
