Matt Smith is a British director best known for his work on the highly acclaimed BBC series Doctor Who and The Crown. Smith was born in Northampton, England in 1982 and began his career as an assistant director on the popular British soap opera EastEnders.

Smith then moved on to directing music videos for artists such as Coldplay, The Verve, and The Libertines. In 2006, Smith made his feature-length directorial debut with the British film, ‘Wah-Wah’, starring Gabriel Byrne and Emily Watson. The film was critically acclaimed and earned Smith a nomination for the BAFTA Award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer.

In 2010, Smith made his television directing debut with the 5th episode of the 5th season of the hit BBC series, Doctor Who. Smith helmed 6 episodes of the series, including the 50th anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor. For his work on the series, Smith received a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series.

In 2016, Smith was announced as the director of the highly anticipated Netflix series, The Crown. The series follows the life of Queen Elizabeth II and was praised for its stunning visuals, epic storytelling, and Smith’s direction. The series earned Smith a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series.

Smith is currently working on the upcoming BBC series, The War of the Worlds. He is also developing a new feature film, titled ‘The Last Airbender’.
