Matt Smith is an American film director, writer, and producer. He is best known for his work on such films as The Imitation Game (2014), The Martian (2015), and The Revenant (2015).

Smith was born in 1982 in Los Angeles, California. He attended the University of Southern California, graduating in 2009 with a degree in film production. During his time at USC, Smith worked on several short films and documentaries.

After graduating, Smith began working in television, directing episodes of various shows such as Parks and Recreation, Castle, and Community. In 2014, Smith made his feature film debut with the biopic The Imitation Game, starring Benedict Cumberbatch. The film was a critical and commercial success, earning Smith his first Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.

In 2015, Smith directed and co-wrote the science fiction hit The Martian starring Matt Damon. The film was a major success, earning Smith his second Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
