Martin Cooper initially trained at the BBC and has more than 30 years of experience as a documentary editor within the British television industry. Over the course of his career, he has worked on numerous films and television series, several of which received BAFTA nominations and RTS awards, establishing his reputation for editorial rigour and narrative sensitivity.
In 2002, he was awarded the Royal Television Society Award for Best Documentary Editor, a recognition that led to his invitation to serve as a judge for the Grierson Documentary Awards in London. Alongside his editorial work, Cooper has been closely engaged with the documentary community, contributing to the development and evaluation of non fiction cinema at a professional level.
In 2018, Martin Cooper directed his first feature documentary, Traces of the Soul, an exploration of contemporary calligraphy across cultures worldwide. The film received First Prize at the Alexandre Trauner Art Film Festival and was awarded Best Contemporary Art Film and Most Beautiful Film at the Master of Art Film Festival in Bulgaria. It also won the Best First Feature award at the Washington DC International Film Festival.
History, Mystery & Odyssey marks his second feature film as a director, continuing his transition from long established editor to filmmaker while maintaining a strong focus on artistic and cultural subjects.
