BIO

Mark Howitt is an award-winning film director from Australia. He is best known for his critically acclaimed films, ‘The Proposition’ (2005) and ‘The Hunter’ (2011).

Howitt was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1970. He studied film at the University of Melbourne, and after graduating, he worked as a camera operator and assistant director for a number of Australian films. In 2004, he made his directorial debut with the short ‘Frost’, which was nominated for an AACTA Award.

In 2005, Howitt released his first feature film, ‘The Proposition’. Set in the Australian outback, the film was a critical and commercial success, and won him numerous awards, including an AFI Award for Best Direction.

Following the success of ‘The Proposition’, Howitt directed the 2009 drama ‘The Hunter’, starring Sam Neill. The film was a success, and was nominated for several awards, including an AACTA Award for Best Direction.

In 2013, Howitt directed the crime thriller ‘The Railway Man’, starring Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman. The film was a box office hit, and earned Howitt an AACTA Award for Best Direction.

In 2018, Howitt directed the biographical drama ‘The House with a Clock in Its Walls’, starring Cate Blanchett and Jack Black. The film was a box office success, and won Howitt an AACTA Award for Best Direction.

Howitt is currently working on a new film, ‘The Promised Land’, which is scheduled for release in 2021. He is also developing a television series, ‘The Mirage’, which will air on the ABC.
