Lucas Vermal is a renowned filmmaker and director from Spain. He is best known for his award-winning films “The Day of the Beast”, “The Last Circus” and “The Skin I Live In”.
Lucas was born in Madrid in 1971. His mother worked as a teacher and his father as an engineer. From a young age, Lucas was drawn to the arts and was particularly fond of film, photography and painting. He studied Spanish literature and philosophy at the University Complutense of Madrid and then moved on to film school at the Escuela de Cine de Madrid.
His first professional job was as a screenwriter on the television series “Callejón sin Salida”. He then wrote and directed his first feature film, “The Day of the Beast”, which won the Goya Award for Best Screenplay in 1995. The film was a huge success and put Lucas on the map as a filmmaker.
After “The Day of the Beast”, Lucas directed a string of critically acclaimed films such as “The Last Circus”, “The Skin I Live In” and “Agora”. His films often explore themes of love, loneliness, and morality. He is known for his dark, suspenseful style and his ability to create complex and layered characters.
Lucas’ films have won numerous awards including the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival for “The Last Circus” and the Goya Award for Best Picture for “The Skin I Live In”. In 2010, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film for “Biutiful”.
Lucas is currently working on a new project, a thriller set in his hometown of Madrid. He continues to be one of the most influential filmmakers in the Spanish film industry. He is a master storyteller whose films explore the depths of the human experience.
