BIO

Julia Kuperberg is a multi-award winning director, producer, and writer. She is best known for her work on the critically acclaimed films The B-Side: Elsa Dorfman’s Portrait Photography (2016) and The Last Word (2019).

Kuperberg was born in New York City and grew up on the Upper East Side. She attended the prestigious Riverdale Country School before graduating from Oberlin College with a degree in Film and Video Production.

In 2014, Kuperberg made her feature film debut with the romantic comedy, Love Is Strange. The film starred John Lithgow and Alfred Molina as a long-time couple who are forced to separate after being evicted from their apartment. Love is Strange received critical acclaim and won the Audience Award at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival.

In 2016, Kuperberg directed and produced her most acclaimed film to date, The B-Side: Elsa Dorfman’s Portrait Photography. The film follows the life and work of the iconic portrait photographer Elsa Dorfman and her career spanning over 40 years. The B-Side was praised for its intimate and honest portrait of Dorfman and won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2016 SXSW Film Festival.

Since then, Kuperberg has been busy directing and producing a variety of projects. In 2019, she wrote and directed her second feature film, The Last Word. The film stars Shirley MacLaine as a retired businesswoman who hires a young journalist to write her obituary. The Last Word was praised for its thoughtful story and MacLaine’s performance and was named one of the Top 10 Films of the Year by the National Board of Review.

Kuperberg has also directed and produced several short films, documentaries, and television series. She currently serves as a producer on the upcoming HBO series The Gilded Age.

Kuperberg is an accomplished filmmaker who is continuing to make a lasting impact on the film industry. She has been praised for her honest and intimate portraits of the people and places she has encountered in her work.
