John Stagliano is an American director and producer of adult films. He is also known as “The Buttman” and is credited with popularizing the “gonzo” porn genre. Stagliano was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1951. He graduated from the University of Southern California in 1973 with a degree in business and economics.
Stagliano began his career in the adult entertainment industry in the early 1980s, working as a manager in a Los Angeles strip club. He then moved on to become a director and producer of adult films. His early works included the 1984 film “Behind the Green Door”, which was the first pornographic movie to feature an interracial couple. Other notable works include “Fashionistas” (2002) and “Buttman’s Ultimate Workout” (2003).
Stagliano is best known for creating the “gonzo” porn genre, which features the director and/or actor engaging in sex acts with multiple partners. He has also directed and produced several award-winning films, including “The Adventures of Buttman” (1989), which won an AVN Award for Best Film.
In 2005, Stagliano was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of obscenity for his involvement in the distribution of videos featuring the use of sex toys. He was acquitted of all charges in 2009.
In addition to his work in adult entertainment, Stagliano has also served as an executive producer for a number of mainstream films, including “The Wrestler” (2008) and “Last Days of Disco” (1998).
Stagliano has been married since 1998 and has two children. He currently lives in Los Angeles, California.
