João Rui Guerra da Mata was born in Mozambique and spent his formative years in Macao. He has been working in film since 1995 as a director, editor and visual artist. His work is marked by a strong engagement with memory, geography and the traces left by history on places and bodies. Since 2007, he has collaborated closely with João Pedro Rodrigues, co directing several key films that form a central part of contemporary Portuguese cinema.
