BIO

Itzel Martínez (born 1982) is a Mexican film director, writer, and producer. She studied film direction at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM).

Her first feature film, Las sucias, was released in 2011. The movie was a success and was selected for the International Film Festival Rotterdam, among other film festivals. The film follows a group of young women in Mexico City, who are trying to make ends meet and find a way out of their difficult circumstances.

In 2013, Martínez directed the short documentary Matar el tiempo (Killing Time). The documentary was selected for the Morelia International Film Festival, and won several awards.

In 2015, Martínez wrote and directed the feature film El desconocido (The Unknown). The film tells the story of a young man in Mexico City who is trying to find his missing father. The film was selected for the Cannes Film Festival, and won the Best Director award at the Guadalajara International Film Festival.

In 2016, Martínez directed the feature film La Casa Lobo (The Wolf House). The film tells the story of a young girl, living in a secluded house in the Mexican countryside. The film was selected for the Venice Film Festival, and won several awards.

Martínez has also directed several short films and documentaries. She is currently working on her next feature film, a horror comedy titled La bruja de la suerte (The Witch of Luck).
