BIO

Hubert Sauper (born in 1968) is an Austrian documentary filmmaker and director. He is best known for his documentaries about the social and political issues in developing countries. His works are known for their creative style and controversial topics.

Sauper grew up in Vienna and studied film at the University of Vienna. After finishing his studies, he worked as a producer and director for several television programs. In 1995, he made his first documentary, “We Come as Friends”. The film focused on the struggles of the Sudanese people during the civil war. It was nominated for Best Documentary at the Cannes Film Festival in 1996.

Sauper’s follow-up documentary, “Darwin’s Nightmare” (2004) was an even bigger success. It explored the effects of the fishing industry in Tanzania on the local people. The film was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and won several awards, including the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.

In 2007, Sauper released his third documentary, “Kingdom of Ghosts”. This film focused on the refugee crisis in Darfur. It was nominated for the European Film Award for Best Documentary and the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance.

In 2010, Sauper released his fourth documentary, “Epicentro”. It was about the aftermath of the US occupation of Haiti and the country’s current political situation. The film won the Best Documentary award at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Sauper’s latest film, “We Are Dreamers!” (2020) is a documentary about the refugee crisis in Europe. It premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival and won the Amnesty International Film Prize.

Throughout his career, Sauper has received numerous awards and nominations for his work. In 2017, he was awarded the Erasmus Prize for his contribution to culture and society. He has also been recognized as one of the world’s leading documentary filmmakers.
