BIO

Huang Yin-Yu is a renowned Taiwanese film director and screenwriter. He is best known for his critically acclaimed films “The Assassin” (2015) and “The Gangster’s Daughter” (2018).

Born in 1967, Huang Yin-Yu grew up in Taiwan. He developed a passion for cinema at a young age, watching classic films of the French New Wave as well as the works of Japanese masters like Akira Kurosawa and Yasujiro Ozu. After completing his studies at the National Taiwan University of Arts, he started his career as a music video director.

In 2003, Huang Yin-Yu made his feature film debut with “A Borrowed Life”, a drama about a Taiwanese family struggling to make ends meet. The film was critically acclaimed and won several awards. This success allowed him to direct the big budget action film “The Sniper” in 2009.

In 2015, Huang Yin-Yu released “The Assassin”, a martial arts film about a female assassin in 9th century China. The film gained him international recognition and won the prestigious Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival. His next film, “The Gangster’s Daughter” (2018) was an adaptation of the novel of the same name. It was a critical success and won the Audience Award at the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival.
