BIO

Hind Benchekroun is a prominent Moroccan filmmaker and director. She is best known for her award-winning films, which explore themes of identity, femininity, and social justice.

Benchekroun was born in Marrakech, Morocco, in 1969. She was raised in an artistic and intellectual environment, which heavily influenced her later work. She attended the High School of Art and Craft in Marrakech, and later studied film at the Institut des Hautes Etudes Cinématographiques in Paris.

Benchekroun’s first feature-length film was the critically-acclaimed documentary ‘In My Mother’s House’ (2003). The film follows the story of a young girl living in a traditional Moroccan home and her struggle to assert her independence. It won the Grand Prix at the Tangier International Film Festival and was nominated for a Golden Shell at the San Sebastian Film Festival.

Benchekroun’s second feature-length film was ‘The Other’ (2008). The film tells the story of a young Moroccan girl’s journey of self-discovery as she is exposed to different cultures and ways of life. It won the Prix de l’Avenir at the Locarno International Film Festival and was nominated for the Golden Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival.

In 2010, Benchekroun wrote and directed her third feature-length film ‘The Silence of Death’. The film follows the story of a young woman who is searching for her identity and place in society after the death of her father. It was nominated for the Golden Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival and won the Grand Prix at the Tetouan International Film Festival.

Benchekroun’s fourth feature-length film was ‘The Last Flight’ (2016). The film tells the story of a Moroccan family’s journey of hope and despair as they attempt to migrate to Europe. It won the Grand Prix at the Tetouan International Film Festival and was nominated for the Golden Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival.

Benchekroun is also the founder of the production company Klab Films, which produces films and documentaries with a focus on social justice and human rights. She is currently working on her fifth feature-length film, ‘In the Land of Silence’, which will explore themes
