BIO

Gary Tarn is a British film director, producer, and screenwriter. He is known for his award-winning documentaries, which explore unique and often overlooked aspects of life.

Tarn was born in London, England in 1967. He began his career as an editor and cameraman on music videos, commercials, and documentaries. In 1997, he directed his first feature-length documentary, Black Sun, which was released to critical acclaim. The film followed the life of an American street photographer living in Paris.

In 2001, Tarn wrote and directed the documentary film, One Mile Away. The film explored the divide between two rival gangs in Birmingham, U.K. and their efforts to broker peace between them. The film was nominated for an Academy Award and BAFTA, and won several awards, including Best Documentary at the London Film Festival.

In 2008, Tarn wrote and directed the feature-length documentary, My Life Directed by Nicholas Winding Refn. The film followed the life of Danish-born filmmaker Nicholas Winding Refn as he made his first feature film in Hollywood. The film was nominated for a BAFTA and won numerous awards, including Best Documentary at the BFI London Film Festival.

In 2012, Tarn wrote and directed the feature-length documentary, Beyond the Edge. The film followed the true story of the first successful ascent of Mount Everest in 1953. The film was nominated for a BAFTA and won several awards, including Best Documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Most recently, Tarn directed the feature-length documentary, A Man and His Monsters, which was released in 2018. The film explored the life and work of special effects artist Ray Harryhausen. The film was nominated for a BAFTA and an Academy Award, and won several awards, including Best Documentary at the British Independent Film Awards.

Throughout his career, Tarn has earned numerous awards and accolades for his work, including a BAFTA nomination. He has proven to be an innovative and talented director, combining stunning visuals with powerful stories to create unique and captivating films.
