Frankie Sakai (1929 - 1996) was a prolific Japanese actor, director and comedian who is best known for his role in the long running television series “Osomatsu-kun”. Born on August 1, 1929 in Osaka, Japan, Sakai was the eldest of four children. He was a very active child, often participating in amateur theatrical productions and even creating his own theater troupe. He studied at the Osaka University of Arts and then went on to study at the Bungakuza Drama School in Tokyo.

In 1953, Sakai made his film debut in “The Last Duel” and his television debut in “The Dangers of the 21st Century”. He became an instant star with his witty and charming performances and went on to star in various films and television shows. He also did voice-over work for several animated films and shows.

In 1966, Sakai was cast in the hugely popular television series “Osomatsu-kun”, playing the role of the titular character. The series was an instant success and ran for nearly a decade. Sakai’s portrayal of the mischievous yet endearing character earned him widespread acclaim and made him a household name.

Sakai also directed several films during his career, including “Nippon Tanjo” (1971), “Kazoku no Uta” (1978) and “Kimi ni Sasagu” (1986). He was also involved in the production of many of the films and television shows he starred in, and he wrote and directed several stage plays as well.

Throughout his career, Sakai won numerous awards and accolades, including the Japan Academy Award for Best Actor in 1984 and the prestigious Medal with Purple Ribbon in 1992. He was also a recipient of the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Second Class, in 1995.

Frankie Sakai passed away on November 18, 1996 from a cerebral hemorrhage. He was 67 years old at the time of his death. His legacy continues to live on through his many memorable performances, and he is remembered as one of the greatest actors in Japanese entertainment history.
