BIO

Frank Gapinski is a prolific Australian film director, writer, and producer. Born in Melbourne, Australia in 1958, Gapinski began his career in the early 1980s directing low budget horror films for several independent production companies. He quickly gained a reputation for creating inventive and entertaining films that pushed the boundaries of the genre.

In the late 1980s, Gapinski began to move away from the horror genre and into more mainstream productions. He wrote and directed a number of feature films, including the award-winning drama ‘The Quiet Earth’ (1985) and the critically acclaimed romantic comedy ‘Mr. Reliable’ (1995). He also wrote and directed the cult classic ‘The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’ (1994), which won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design.

Gapinski has continued to explore a variety of genres throughout his career, including science fiction, romantic comedy, and drama. In 2003, he directed the feature film ‘The Matrix Revolutions’, the third installment in the Matrix trilogy. The film was a huge commercial success and is considered by many to be one of the most influential science fiction films of all time.

In addition to his film work, Gapinski is also an accomplished television director. He has directed episodes of the hit Australian soap opera ‘Neighbours’ and the Emmy Award winning drama series ‘The West Wing’.

Gapinski has also produced a number of popular feature films, including ‘The Dish’ (2000), ‘The Tracker’ (2002), and ‘The Proposition’ (2005). He has also produced several successful television series, including ‘SeaChange’ (1998) and ‘Rake’ (2010).

Throughout his career, Gapinski has been recognized for his contributions to the film industry. In 2005, he was awarded the Order of Australia for his services to the film industry. He was also honored with the Australian Film Institute's Longford-Lyell Award for his lifetime achievement in film in 2009.
