BIO

Frank Amann is a German film director and screenwriter. He is best known for his work on the critically acclaimed and award-winning films The Lives of Others (2006), The Baader Meinhof Complex (2008), and The White Ribbon (2009).

Born in Munich in 1961, Amann studied film at the University of Television & Film Munich. He began his career as an assistant director on the television series Der Trip (1993) and the feature film Der Totmacher (1995). After directing some television movies, Amann made his feature film debut with Das Experiment (2001), a thriller starring Moritz Bleibtreu, which was a critical and commercial success.

Amann followed Das Experiment with the critically acclaimed The Lives of Others in 2006, a drama about the surveillance of citizens by the East German secret police. The film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film.

In 2008, Amann directed The Baader Meinhof Complex, a biopic about the left-wing militant group the Red Army Faction. The film received numerous awards, including the German Film Award for Best Feature Film.

In 2009, Amann released his third feature film, The White Ribbon, which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film, and the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. The film examines the events leading up to World War I in a small village in northern Germany.

Since then, Amann has directed several television movies and series, as well as the feature films Hannah Arendt (2012) and Age of Cannibals (2014). He is currently in production on the miniseries The Nevers, set to premiere in 2021.

Throughout his career, Amann has been praised for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to create compelling stories. He has won numerous awards for his work, including four German Film Awards, two Academy Awards, and two Golden Globes.
