François Weyergans is a Belgian film director, producer, and screenwriter. He is best known for his feature film "The First Day of the Rest of Your Life," which earned him multiple awards, including the 2008 César Award for Best Film.

Weyergans was born in 1949 in Brussels, Belgium. He studied at the Institut des hautes études cinématographiques in Paris and began working as an assistant director in 1974. In 1980, he directed his first feature film, “Le Roi des Belges.”

In 1987, Weyergans directed and co-wrote his second feature film, “My Best Friend,” which earned him a nomination for the César Award for Best Director. He followed this up with two more films, “The First Day of the Rest of Your Life” and “The Invader,” both of which garnered him critical acclaim.

In 2008, Weyergans directed “The First Day of the Rest of Your Life,” a family drama about a couple and their two children. The film was a commercial and critical success, winning the César Award for Best Film as well as the Grand Prize of the Jury at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival.

In 2012, Weyergans wrote and directed the drama “The Invader,” which tells the story of a young African immigrant in Belgium. The film was well-received and earned Weyergans the Magritte Award for Best Screenplay as well as the César Award for Best Director.

Since then, Weyergans has continued to write and direct films, including “The White Knights” (2015) and “The Best of All Worlds” (2017). He has also written and produced several television series, including “The Return of the Memory” (2009) and “The Life of the Others” (2012).

Weyergans is one of Belgium’s most acclaimed directors, having earned numerous awards and nominations for his films. He has been praised for his thoughtful and sensitive approach to storytelling, and his films have been highly regarded by critics and audiences alike.
