Fran Lebowitz is an American author, public speaker, and occasional actor. She is known for her sardonic social commentary on American life as filtered through her New York City sensibilities. She is the author of two books, Metropolitan Life (1978) and Social Studies (1981).

Lebowitz was born in Morristown, New Jersey, on October 27, 1950. She was raised in a Jewish family and attended the Morristown-Beard School and later the Art Students League of New York. In 1971, Lebowitz moved to the East Village in Manhattan and began writing articles for magazines like Interview, Harper's, Mademoiselle, and Esquire.

In 1978, Lebowitz published her first book, Metropolitan Life, which is a collection of essays that offer humorous and scathing observations on the foibles of urban life. The book was an instant success and was praised by critics for its wit and insight.

In 1981, Lebowitz followed up with her second book, Social Studies, which focused on the absurdities of modern life. It was also praised by critics, though some felt that it was not as funny or sharp as her first book.

Lebowitz is also known for her public appearances, where she offers her unique brand of social commentary. She has appeared on television shows like Late Night with David Letterman and The Colbert Report. She is also a frequent guest on NPR’s Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!

In addition to writing and appearing on television, Lebowitz has also made appearances in several films, including The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) and Zoolander (2001).
