Femke Van Velzen is a Dutch director and screenwriter, most known for her work on the film ‘Lotte’ and the television series ‘Het Verborgen Eiland’. Born in Amsterdam in 1972, Femke grew up surrounded by art and film, which gave her a passion for the medium. She studied film in Utrecht, where she developed her skills and techniques. After graduating, Femke worked as a freelance director and editor for various television series, working with some of the best and brightest in the industry.

In 2002, Femke made her feature film debut with her own script, ‘Lotte’. The film was a success, and earned her numerous awards, including Best Film at the Netherlands Film Festival, and Best Dutch Director at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. The film also earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.

In 2009, Femke wrote and directed her second feature film, ‘De Liefde Van Mijn Leven’. The film was an adaptation of a novel by the same name, and starred Dutch actress Carice van Houten. The film was a hit with critics, and earned Femke her second Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.

Femke’s other works include the television series ‘Het Verborgen Eiland’, which she wrote and directed. The series was a massive success, and earned Femke the Dutch Film Critics Award for Best TV Series. She has also directed several short films, including the award-winning ‘Café de Stilte’.

Femke is currently working on her third feature film, ‘De Dag Des Oordeels’. The film is set to be released in 2019.

Throughout her career, Femke has been praised for her unique vision and captivating storytelling. Her films have earned her numerous awards and nominations, making her one of the most successful female directors in the Netherlands.
