Eamonn McCann is an Irish actor, filmmaker, and writer. He was born in Belfast in 1947, and he has been a prominent figure in the Irish film and theatre industry since the 1970s.

McCann has had a long and successful career in both film and stage, appearing in over forty films and numerous plays and television shows. He is best known for his roles in the films The Commitments (1991), The Snapper (1993), and My Left Foot (1989), for which he received a BAFTA award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He has also appeared in such films as The Miracle (1991), A Man of No Importance (1994), and The Tailor of Panama (2001).

McCann's stage career includes many memorable performances, including roles in two Broadway productions of The Playboy of the Western World (1982) and Juno and the Paycock (1983). He also appeared in the original production of Brian Friel’s Translations (1980). He has worked extensively in Ireland with the Abbey Theatre, Dublin, and the Gate Theatre in Dublin, and he has also appeared in the West End of London.

McCann has also written a number of plays, including The Silent Cabaret (1984), The Year of the Hiker (1999), and The Field of the Cloth of Gold (2003). He has also been a regular contributor to the Irish literary magazine The Stinging Fly.

McCann was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Ulster in 2009, and in 2012 he was awarded the prestigious PEN/Pinter Prize for his work in promoting freedom of expression.

McCann continues to work in film, television, and theatre. He appeared in the film The Guard (2011), and in television shows such as Game of Thrones (2011-2013) and The Fall (2013). He is also currently appearing in the stage production of Brendan Behan’s The Quare Fellow at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin.
