Doug Flutie is an American former professional football player and current analyst. He played in the National Football League (NFL), the Canadian Football League (CFL), and the United States Football League (USFL). He is best known for his collegiate and professional football career, which spanned more than 20 years.
Flutie was born in Manchester, Maryland, and began playing football at a young age. He attended Natick High School and went on to attend Boston College, where he became one of the most successful quarterbacks in college football history. He set multiple records, including the all-time NCAA record for most passing yards in a single season. He was named the consensus 1984 College Football Player of the Year and won the Heisman Trophy.
Following his collegiate career, Flutie was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in the 1985 NFL Draft. He spent the next three seasons with the club before being released. He went on to join the Chicago Bears and New England Patriots, and ultimately, the BC Lions of the CFL. While in the CFL, Flutie won three Grey Cups and was named the league’s Most Outstanding Player a record six times.
In 1998, Flutie returned to the NFL, where he played for the Buffalo Bills and San Diego Chargers. He was named the NFL Comeback Player of the Year in 1998 and led the Bills to the playoffs in 1999. He also played for the New England Patriots in 2005, and briefly returned to the CFL in 2006.
Flutie is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, and was named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team for the 1990s. He is also an analyst for NBC Sports and serves as a volunteer assistant coach for Natick High School’s football team.
Flutie has also been active in philanthropy, launching the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism in 1998. The foundation has raised millions of dollars for autism-related causes, and is dedicated to helping families affected by autism. He also hosts an annual golf tournament to benefit the foundation.
Flutie is one of the most decorated football players in history, with an illustrious career spanning more than two decades. He has achieved success both on and off the field, and is a true inspiration to many.
