Donita Sparks is an iconic American musician, singer, songwriter, and actress. She is best known as the lead singer and guitarist of the all-female punk rock band L7, which she co-founded in 1985. L7 rose to prominence in the late 1980s and early 1990s, becoming one of the most influential bands of the grunge era.

Sparks was born in 1965 in Chicago, Illinois. She was exposed to a wide variety of music styles growing up, ranging from classical to classic rock. In her teens, Sparks began playing the guitar and writing her own music. She attended the University of Minnesota in the early 1980s, where she studied art and music.

In 1985, Sparks and her friend Suzi Gardner founded the band L7 in Los Angeles. The band released their debut album “L7” in 1988 and quickly gained attention for their energetic performances and unique sound. L7 went on to release several successful albums over the next decade, including “Smell the Magic” (1990), “Bricks Are Heavy” (1992), and “The Beauty Process: Triple Platinum” (1994).

Throughout her career with L7, Sparks wrote many of the band’s songs and served as the primary vocalist and guitarist. She also became known for her outspokenness and activism, especially during the 1990s. Sparks was an outspoken critic of the major record labels and their treatment of female artists, and advocated for gender equality in the music industry.

In the 2000s, Sparks stepped away from the music industry and began acting. She appeared in several independent films, including “Voodoo Dollz” (2004) and “Fashionista” (2006). In 2006, she co-founded the clothing company Donita Sparks & the Stellar Moments, which sells vintage-style clothing and accessories.

In 2014, Sparks reunited with L7 for a series of reunion shows throughout the United States and Europe. The band’s reunion was met with critical acclaim, and they continue to tour and record music together. Sparks continues to act, write, and perform music with L7 today.

Donita Sparks is an iconic figure in the music and entertainment world. Her influence on punk rock and the grunge scene cannot be overstated, and her activism and outspokenness have made her an enduring source of inspiration for generations of female musicians.
