Diana Nyad is an iconic figure in the world of endurance swimming, having completed the world's longest open water swim in record time. Nyad is also an accomplished author, journalist, and motivational speaker.

Nyad was born in New York City on August 22, 1949. She grew up in Florida and was an avid swimmer from a young age. Nyad was a competitive swimmer, setting national records at the age of 16 and competing in the 1968 Olympics. After college, she became a professional swimmer, competing in long-distance competitions around the world.

In 1978, Nyad attempted to swim the Florida Straits from Cuba to Florida, but she was unable to complete the swim due to strong currents and weather conditions. She tried again in 1979, but was again unsuccessful. After her second attempt, Nyad retired from competitive swimming and moved to Los Angeles, where she became a journalist and radio host.

In 2011, Nyad announced that she would be attempting the swim from Cuba to Florida once again. On September 2, 2013, she completed the swim in just over 53 hours, becoming the first person to do so without the assistance of a shark cage or other protection.

The swim made Nyad an international celebrity and she was honored with numerous awards, including being named one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2013.

Nyad is also an accomplished author, having written two books about her life and her swims. She has also given motivational speeches to various organizations, inspiring people around the world.
