Denis Mulcahy is an Irish actor and director best known for his roles in the films The Commitments, In the Name of the Father, and Angela's Ashes. He has also appeared in a number of television series, including The Tudors, Father Ted, and The Clinic.

Mulcahy was born in 1959 in Dublin, Ireland. He attended Saint Columba's National School and then went on to study at the Dublin Institute of Technology. He began his acting career in the early 1980s, making his first appearances on stage with the Dublin Youth Theatre. He went on to appear in a number of plays, including a production of Hamlet at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin.

In 1991, Mulcahy made his big screen debut in the British-Irish comedy-drama The Commitments, directed by Alan Parker. He played the role of Jimmy Rabbitte, a young music enthusiast who starts a soul music band. The film was a critical and commercial success, and earned Mulcahy a nomination for a BAFTA Award for Best Actor.

In 1993, Mulcahy starred in Jim Sheridan’s biographical drama In the Name of the Father, alongside Daniel Day-Lewis and Pete Postlethwaite. He played the role of Gerry Conlon, who was falsely accused of being a part of the IRA and sent to prison. The film was a critical and commercial success, and earned Mulcahy an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

In 1999, Mulcahy made his directorial debut with the film Angela’s Ashes, which was based on the novel by Frank McCourt. The film was a success, and earned Mulcahy a nomination for a Golden Globe Award for Best Director.

Since then, Mulcahy has appeared in a number of television series, including The Tudors, Father Ted, and The Clinic. He has also continued to work in theatre, including a production of the classic Irish play The Playboy of the Western World.

Throughout his career, Mulcahy has proven himself to be a versatile and talented actor and director, capable of tackling a variety of roles. He has won numerous awards and nominations, and remains one of Ireland’s most respected actors and filmmakers.
