Dan Mudford was born in London in 1976 and raised in the city's East End. He attended the University of Westminster and graduated in 2001 with a degree in Film Studies.

Mudford was first noticed as a director when he won a student award for his short film 'The Devil's Advocate'. He followed this up with a number of music videos for various artists including the Chemical Brothers and the Prodigy. In 2004 he directed his first feature film, 'The Long Weekend'. The film was a critical success and earned Mudford a nomination for the British Independent Film Awards.

In 2006 Mudford wrote and directed his second feature, 'The Painted Veil'. The film starred Naomi Watts and Edward Norton and was highly acclaimed for its visuals and performances. It was nominated for a number of awards, including Best Adapted Screenplay at the Academy Awards.

Mudford's next film was 'The Reader', released in 2008. The film was highly acclaimed and was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Mudford also received a nomination for the BAFTA for Best Adapted Screenplay.

In 2011 Mudford released his fourth feature, 'The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel'. The film was a major box office success and was nominated for a number of awards including Best Picture at the BAFTA.

Mudford's most recent film is 'The Light Between Oceans', released in 2016. The film was a critical and commercial success, and Mudford was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Academy Awards.
