Carlo Zoratti is an Italian filmmaker recognised for his sensitive and original approach to storytelling. Born in Udine in 1980, he studied engineering before dedicating himself to cinema, working as an editor, assistant director and later as a director. His early collaborations with the Italian musician Lorenzo Cherubini (Jovanotti) on music videos and live tour visuals revealed his ability to blend visual experimentation with emotional depth.
Zoratti’s first feature documentary, The Special Need (2013), established him internationally. The film, which follows his friend Enea, a young man with autism searching for love and intimacy, premiered at the Locarno Film Festival and went on to win multiple awards, including the Golden Dove at DOK Leipzig, the Audience Award at SXSW, and Best Film at Festa do Cinema Italiano. The documentary was widely praised for its empathy, humour and nuanced exploration of human desire and vulnerability.
Beyond his film work, Zoratti has directed music videos, television projects and artistic installations, always maintaining a strong focus on human connection and the complexity of emotions. His storytelling combines documentary authenticity with cinematic precision, creating works that invite reflection on identity, affection and the shared need for understanding.
