Caleb Deschanel is an American film and television director, cinematographer, and actor. He is best known for his work on the films The Right Stuff, The Patriot, and The Passion of the Christ.

Born in Philadelphia in 1944, Deschanel grew up in California. He studied film and television production at the University of Southern California, graduating in 1965. Deschanel began his professional career as a cinematographer, working on such films as The Black Stallion, The Right Stuff, and The Natural. In 1983, he won an Emmy for his work on the television series The Right Stuff.

In addition to his work as a cinematographer, Deschanel has directed several films. He made his directorial debut with the 1992 drama The Passion of the Christ, which was nominated for two Academy Awards. He followed this up with the 1999 drama The Patriot, starring Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger.

Deschanel has also appeared in several films, including The Right Stuff, The Patriot, The Passion of the Christ, and National Treasure. He was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for his performance in the television series Without a Trace.

In addition to his film and television work, Deschanel is an accomplished photographer. His photographs have appeared in Life and National Geographic magazines, as well as numerous books.

Deschanel has been married to actress Mary Jo Weir since 1975. They have two daughters, actress Emily Deschanel and actress Zooey Deschanel.

Caleb Deschanel has had a long and successful career in film and television. His work as a cinematographer, director, and actor has earned him numerous awards and accolades. He continues to work in the industry, with his most recent film, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, released in 2007.
