Butch Vig is an American musician, record producer, and songwriter. He is best known for producing Nirvana’s Nevermind. He has worked with numerous other bands including Garbage, Foo Fighters, Muse, and Green Day.

Vig was born Bryan David Vigorson in Viroqua, Wisconsin in 1955. He grew up playing in various bands in Wisconsin. Vig graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1977 and studied audio engineering. After college, he moved to Madison, Wisconsin and started Smart Studios with Steve Marker in 1983.

Smart Studios became a revered studio known for its work with underground acts, most notably with Nirvana. Vig produced Nirvana’s groundbreaking album, Nevermind, and was closely involved with the band’s material. He was also a co-writer on the song “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

Vig’s production work on Nevermind helped launch him into mainstream success. He has since gone on to produce albums by Garbage, Foo Fighters, and Green Day. He produced the Foo Fighters’ third album, There Is Nothing Left to Lose, which received widespread acclaim.

In the late 1990s, Vig formed the band Garbage. The band has released six studio albums and has achieved success with singles like “Stupid Girl” and “Only Happy When It Rains.”

Vig has also produced albums for numerous other bands including The Smashing Pumpkins, Veruca Salt, and Sonic Youth. He has also worked with various artists such as David Bowie, U2, and Nine Inch Nails.

In addition to his work as a producer, Vig is also an accomplished musician. He has released several albums as a solo artist, most notably Blinking Lights and Other Revelations. He has also collaborated with various artists, releasing albums as a duo with Steve Marker under the name Firetown.
