BIO

Brillante Mendoza is a Filipino film director who is renowned for his unique and daring approach to filmmaking. Born in the city of Malolos, Bulacan, in 1960, he was raised by his mother and grandmother. He attended the University of Santo Tomas and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Film Directing.

Mendoza's career in film began in the late 1980s, when he started making independent short films and documentaries. His first feature film, “Manoro”, was released in 2005 and earned him recognition in the Philippines and abroad. This film opened the door to several other projects which earned him awards from prestigious film festivals. His 2009 film “Kinatay”, for example, won the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival, making him the first Filipino director to do so.

Mendoza is known for his unique style of directing, which often involves low-budget productions and non-professional actors. He often shoots in real locations and his films often focus on marginalized people living on the fringes of society. His films are often a reflection of Filipino society and culture.

In addition to directing, Mendoza has also produced films, written scripts, and worked as an assistant director on other projects.
