BIO

Benjamin Statler is an American director, producer, and screenwriter who has been making films since the early 2000s. He is best known for his work on the Netflix documentary series Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness and the feature film Unsane starring Claire Foy.

Statler was born in California in 1981 and attended the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Film and Television Production. After graduating, he worked in a variety of roles in the film industry, including as a production assistant and assistant director.

In 2010, Statler made his directorial debut with the feature film Unsane, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and starred Claire Foy and Juno Temple. The film was a critical and commercial success, and earned Statler a nomination for the Hollywood Film Festival's Breakthrough Director Award.

In 2018, Statler co-directed (with Eric Goode) the documentary series Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness for Netflix. The seven-part series followed the life of Joe Exotic, a cult-like figure in the world of exotic animal breeding and trading. The series was a massive hit, becoming one of the most-watched series on Netflix ever, and earned Statler an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Directing for a Documentary/Nonfiction Program.

Statler is also known for his work on the feature film Escape Room, which was released in 2019. He also directed the 2020 film Unsinkable about the sinking of the Titanic, which starred Matthew McConaughey and Kate Winslet.

Statler has received critical praise for his work, with critics noting his ability to create highly atmospheric and suspenseful films. He is currently in pre-production on his next feature film, an adaptation of the novel The White Cat.
