Arsen Dedić

Arsen Dedić is a Croatian singer and songwriter who is often referred to as one of the most important figures in Croatian music. Born in Split, Croatia in 1938, Dedić grew up in a musical family and began playing the piano at the age of five. He studied classical music at the Split Music Academy, where he developed a talent for improvisation. After graduation, he moved to Zagreb where he formed his first band, the Arsen Dedić Orchestra.

Dedić is best known for his work in the 1970s and 1980s, when his songs became popular throughout Croatia and the former Yugoslavia. His most popular songs were "Tvoje lice zvuči poznato" ("Your Face Sounds Familiar"), "Zar si ludo volio" ("Have You Crazy Loved"), and "Dajte mi utjehu" ("Give Me Comfort"). He also wrote the song "Brod u boci" ("Ship in a Bottle"), which won the 1979 Eurovision Song Contest.

Dedić's style is a combination of jazz, folk, and classical music, and his lyrics often deal with themes of love, nostalgia, and longing. He has released over 25 albums and collaborated with many of the most famous Croatian musicians, including Oliver Dragojević and Arsenije Jovanović. In addition to his music, Dedić has also written several plays, most notably "Lijepa Ana" ("Beautiful Anna") and "Crne i bijele noći" ("Black and White Nights").

Throughout his career, Dedić has been awarded numerous honors, including the Croatian Music Academy Prize in 1982, the Porin Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1999, and the Order of Danica Hrvatska in 2012. In 2019, he was inducted into the Croatian Music Hall of Fame.
