BIO

André Barcinski is a Brazilian director, screenwriter, and producer. He is best known for his critically acclaimed films, including São Bernardo (1992), O Quatrilho (1995), and O Homem Que Copiava (2003).

Barcinski was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1958. He was an avid reader from an early age, and by the time he was sixteen he had already read the works of Dostoevsky, Kafka, and Camus. He studied sociology at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and later received a Ph.D. in cinema from the Sorbonne in Paris.

His debut film, São Bernardo, was released in 1992 and quickly became an international success. It tells the story of a struggling Brazilian farmer in the late 19th century. The film earned Barcinski numerous awards and nominations, including the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.

In 1995, Barcinski released his second film, O Quatrilho. It was the first Brazilian film to be nominated for an Oscar and was a commercial success. It tells the story of two families struggling to survive in a small town in the south of Brazil. The film was praised for its excellent cinematography and for its unique take on the Brazilian culture.

Barcinski has also directed several documentaries, including The Art of Music (2008) and The Last Day of Winter (2012). He has also written and produced several films, including the award-winning drama The Sea Inside (2005).
