Aleksandr M. Vinogradov is a film director and producer based in Brussels. Born in the north of Russia, he moved to Moscow in 2002, where he worked as a creative director before transitioning fully into filmmaking.
In 2012, he graduated with honours from the Humanitarian Institute of Television, presenting his graduation film Five Steps of Butoh. In 2014, he worked as a unit director on the BBC feature documentary Robbie Williams. Fans Journey to Tallinn. The following year, he completed the DocNomads master programme with his graduation film Call Me Chaos, which premiered in 2016 at Visions du Réel.
In 2016, Vinogradov began a second master programme at LUCA School of Arts. His graduation film Under the Dress premiered in 2019 at Visions du Réel and at the Mezipatra Queer Film Festival. In 2020, he released his first feature documentary Bare, exploring male nudity in visual arts through the creation of a dance performance by eleven nude male dancers, choreographed by Belgian artist Thierry Smits. The film had its world premiere at Hot Docs, followed by premieres at Doc Edge and DOC NYC.
In 2022, Vinogradov premiered his second feature documentary Before We Move, focusing on queer tango dancers from Saint Petersburg who migrate to Israel amid an increasingly hostile LGBTQ+ political climate. The film premiered at the Sheffield DocFest and later screened at the TLVFest.
Alongside his work in documentary cinema, Vinogradov focuses on experimenting with form, structure, and visual arts across documentaries, television series, film, and animation. He is currently working on the short film Entre Dos!, featuring tango dancers Maria Filali and Sigrid Vam Tilbeurgh.
