Founded in 1976 at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, the Margaret Mead Film Festival is the longest-running premiere showcase for international documentary film in the United States. Named in honor of pioneering anthropologist Margaret Mead, the festival presents ethnographic and nonfiction works that foster cross-cultural understanding, ranging from indigenous community media to experimental documentaries.
