Fragments of a past, partially lost, come alive through a filmstrip’s decay. This experimental, cameraless animation short crafted from the 35mm trailer of Céline Sciamma’s Water Lilies (2007).
They Rise, These Sponge Fortresses - Memory resurfaces—scratched, painted, and reimagined
What if memory could be touched, scraped, and remade? This hypnotic, cameraless animated short documentary is where filmmaker Guillaume Vallée reclaims fragments of his teenage past through the physicality of 35mm film.
Using the trailer of Water Lilies (2007) as both canvas and catalyst, Vallée paints, scratches, and distorts the emulsion, creating a chaotic yet deeply intimate reconstruction of lost experiences. Layered with a textured soundtrack by Stephanie Castonguay and poetic texts by Gabrielle Boulianne-Tremblay, this experimental work transforms the erosion of memory into an act of cinematic resurrection.
