The elusive genius of Sergio Larraín, captured between light and silence.
The Eternal Moment (Sergio Larraín: El instante eterno) is a Chilean biographical documentary film directed by Sebastián Moreno and written by Moreno and Claudia Barril. The film portrays the extraordinary life and artistic journey of Sergio Larraín, the most acclaimed photographer in Chile and one of the few from Latin America to join the prestigious Magnum Photos agency. Known for his haunting compositions and poetic vision, Larraín achieved international recognition before abruptly abandoning photography and retreating to the quiet mountain town of Tulahuén, where he devoted himself to a life of introspection and spiritual pursuit.
Through extensive research, archival materials, and thoughtful testimonies, the documentary reconstructs Larraín’s creative path and explores the enigma of his voluntary disappearance from the art world. Critics have praised the film for its journalistic precision and emotional depth, describing it as an exceptional audiovisual portrait with great historical and cultural value.
Winner of the Best Chilean Documentary Award from the Circle of Art Critics of Chile (2021), the Best Film in the National Documentary Competition at the Valparaíso International Recovered Film Festival (2022), and Best Director for Sebastián Moreno at the Saraqusta Film Festival (2023), The Eternal Moment stands as both an homage and an investigation into the light and solitude that defined Sergio Larraín’s art and life.
