Self-portrait with Lev - Motherhood amidst war, adapting with resilience

A young woman from Russia arrives in the United States to begin her PhD at UC Berkeley. Just as she embarks on her academic journey, she adapts to a new life. When her son Lev is born in 2022, only months after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, her world shifts even further.

Unable to return to her family in Moscow, she seeks refuge with her American husband’s family in Cambridge, Massachusetts. While warmly welcomed, the arrival of a newborn brings old family tensions to the surface, forcing the household to confront unresolved conflicts.

As global events unfold, this intimate portrait shows how personal and historical crises intertwine, with resilience and adaptation at the heart of survival.
