Women who refuse to stay on the sidelines

Khartoum Offside follows a remarkable group of young women in Sudan who are committed to playing football professionally, even though the sport is officially banned for women under the country’s Islamic Military government. Over several years, the documentary offers an intimate portrait of their relentless attempt to be recognised as Sudan’s National Woman’s football team. Their path is marked by courage, humour and moments of disappointment as they navigate a system that repeatedly marginalises them, despite the National Football Federation receiving FIFA funds meant for women’s teams.

The film observes their daily efforts and shared camaraderie, showing how friendship and collective determination become essential tools in their fight for legitimacy. As internal elections within the football federation approach, the women see the potential for real institutional reform that could alter the future of the sport in Sudan. Through its portrayal of these athletes, Khartoum Offside highlights themes of gender, politics and resilience within a society where public space and expression are often restricted. The documentary film underlines the significance of their struggle, offering a clear and moving account of their hope for recognition and equality.
