Two Afghan sisters fight for freedom inside and outside the ring
Boxing for Freedom explores the story of Sadaf and Shabnam Rahimi, two Afghan sisters who returned to their country after living as refugees in Iran and chose a path that defies deeply rooted patriarchal traditions. Determined to pursue their passion for sport, they became outstanding female boxers in a society where their discipline and public presence are often questioned. The film follows Sadaf, the older sister, whose achievements include participating in the Olympics and competing in numerous championships around the world. Her journey shows both the pride of representing Afghanistan and the difficulties of facing criticism from neighbours and even from within her own family.
Directed by Juan Antonio Moreno and Silvia Venegas, the documentary offers a close and personal portrait of the sisters as they confront fear, social pressure and their own expectations. The camera acts as a confidante, capturing their aspirations, concerns and moments of joy while they navigate a reality marked by limitations on women’s freedom. Through their voices, the film illustrates how sport becomes a space of resistance, identity and hope. Boxing for Freedom presents a detailed account of their fight, both literal and symbolic, and highlights their role as examples for many young Afghan women who seek to define their own future.
