The inspiring story of the young jazz prodigies of Sant Andreu

A Film About Kids and Music is a heartwarming documentary directed by Ramon Tort about the Sant Andreu Jazz Band, a Barcelona-based orchestra formed by children and teenagers between 6 and 18 years old under the direction of saxophonist Joan Chamorro. What began as a simple music class evolved into one of Spain’s most captivating jazz projects, filling major auditoriums with its vibrant swing and youthful energy.

The film offers an intimate look at the band’s daily life, balancing the routines of school and family life with intense rehearsals and performances. Through an observational approach, Tort captures the enthusiasm, rigour, and camaraderie that define Chamorro’s teaching method—an approach that encourages each student to explore their full musical potential.

Along the way, the young musicians share the stage with renowned jazz figures such as Jesse Davis, Terell Stafford, and Wycliffe Gordon, whose guidance and admiration highlight the band’s extraordinary level of musicianship. Among them stands Elsa, a six-year-old trumpet player whose pure sound embodies the spirit of the group.

Between 2013 and 2014, A Film About Kids and Music was screened at 37 international festivals and received 14 awards, including the Audience Award for Best International Documentary at the Nashville Film Festival, the Platinum Award for Best Documentary at WorldFest Houston, and the Best Spanish Musical Documentary at the IN-EDIT Beefeater Festival in Spain. This joyful and moving portrait celebrates the transformative power of music and the magic that happens when passion meets education.
