Maryam Goormaghtigh is an Iranian-born film director, screenwriter, and producer. She has gained international recognition for her socially engaged films and documentaries that explore the lives of marginalised people in Iran.
Goormaghtigh was born in Tehran, Iran in 1985. She studied Cinema at Soore University in Tehran, graduating in 2007. After completing her studies, she worked as a director and producer for a number of independent film projects.
In 2009, she wrote and directed her first feature film, 'The White Meadows', which premiered at the 2009 Rotterdam International Film Festival. The film follows a man who travels around an isolated island in Iran, searching for the tears of the suffering. The film received critical acclaim, winning a number of awards at international film festivals.
Following the success of 'The White Meadows', Goormaghtigh directed 'My Tehran for Sale' (2009), which tells the story of a young woman who struggles to live an independent life in Tehran. In 2013, Goormaghtigh directed 'The Tale of The Sea', which tells the story of a young Iranian woman who travels to an isolated island in search of her missing father. The film was nominated for the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival and was screened at several international film festivals.
Goormaghtigh has also directed a number of documentaries, including 'The Dream of Shahrazad' (2010), which explores the lives of Iranian women living in exile, and 'The Silence of the Sea' (2015), which follows the lives of Iranians living in the diaspora.
