Jan Tenhaven is a German film director and producer. He is best known for his work in the German independent film industry, particularly for the films he directed and produced, such as Sonnenallee (1999), Der Krieger und die Kaiserin (2000) and Die fetten Jahre sind vorbei (2004).
Tenhaven was born in Berlin, Germany, in 1970. He grew up in a working-class family and developed an interest in film at a young age. He studied film and literature at the University of Berlin. After graduating in 1996, he began working as an assistant director for the German film company X-Filme Creative Pool.
Tenhaven's first feature film, Sonnenallee, was released in 1999 and was an instant success. It tells the story of two teenage boys living in East Berlin during the early days of German reunification. The film was embraced by critics for its realism, humour, and bittersweet sentimentality.
