Through the daily lives of three traditional farmers in the Cornwall region, this documentary portrays contemporary rural farming in England and its challenges.
Dying Breed. Three farms in rural England
In the middle of a Spring night, farmer Ivan and stockman Jonathan are faced with the difficult birth of a Red Ruby calf. They decide to call the vet, who eventually delivers the calf with the aid of a calf jack. Two days later, castrated and tagged, the healthy male calf is out with its mother and the rest of the herd.
7 miles away Geoffrey is up early milking his herd of Holstein Friesians. It has to be done twice a day, every day. What with the cows and his beef cattle Geoffrey puts in long hours, mostly alone, for scant reward. His farm buildings are dilapidated and in need substantial repair. He doesn’t think it’s worth carrying on much longer.
